SI5.5: Change Block Layer and Color without the AutoCAD Block Editor

Submitted by on 03/02/2009 – 5:04 pm8 Comments

change-layer-and-color1As the AutoCAD product Engineer for D-Tools, I have received feedback from customers wondering about the flexibility on changing the layer and color for D-tools blocks. As you know, in order to change the color on any block in AutoCAD you must enter into the block editor. SI5.5 includes a new custom command, which not only works on our D-Tools blocks, but also on any regular block or dynamic block. This means that for any block you can create, whether or not you link it to D-Tools, the layer and color can be changed without entering into the AutoCAD block editor. SI5.5 users will not only be able to change layer and color, but also to drop a D-Tools block under the current layer. The change layer and color function is found under the D-tools right click menu. So, as for the “dropping block under the current layer” feature, if your current layer is layer 0 will the block automatically become part of the correct layer is it does in 5.2?

In SI5.2 the dropping under the current layer was not working right. If you drop a block from the category accessories under current layer “0”, also was create the layer “accessories”, then if you turn off “accessories” layer while keeping on layer “0”, the block that was dropped under current layer “0” was turn off too. Now in SI5.5 does as AutoCAD regularly do with any entity in a drawing page, and no longer creates the block’s category layer.

“…in order to change the color on any block in AutoCAD you must enter into the block editor…”

I’m not sure i understand this statement. If the contents of your block are “ByBlock” then the block will adopt the color of whatever layer you drop it on. If the contents of your block are “ByLayer” then the block should maintain the colors of the layer they are on.
